Nick Perrett, Rachael Fenton, Nick Bunn
    NICK PERRETT CMLI Dip-LA BA(Hons)
    Principal Landscape Architect
Nick is a chartered Landscape Architect who trained initially in Horticulture with The Royal Horticultural Society, before gaining valuable practical experience in the landscape construction industry.

After graduating with a BA(Hons) and a DipLA in Landscape Architecture from Manchester Metropolitan University Nick has worked in private practice and the public sector working on a broad spectrum of land use and development projects in the UK and Australia. Projects include hotels, play spaces, holiday and leisure sites, urban parks and gardens, and cultural centres.

Before establishing redbay design in 2006 Nick was employed at Groundwork Kent and Medway working up from project Landscape Architect to Team Principal during six years with the company.

Much of Nick's working career has been managing regeneration projects, taking jobs from inception to completion, leading multi-disciplinary teams and coordinating all the many different project elements. This gives him an excellent understanding of the processes necessary for the realisation of major construction and environmental projects.

As managing director Nick oversees every project undertaken by the company to ensure the highest levels of service and quality of work.
    NICK BUNN MA BA(Hons)
    Landscape Architect
Nick graduated from University College Falmouth with a BA (Hons) in Spatial Design and then went on to complete his MA in Landscape Architecture at Birmingham University from which he graduated in 2012.

Since graduating from Falmouth Nick worked for a planning consultancy in Shropshire whilst studying towards his MA part-time. This allowed him to gain a valuable insight into the UK planning system and the key role that Landscape Architecture plays, specifically in areas of development constraint such as Green Belt and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty nation-wide. Nick developed and provided Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment services, producing these key documents and working alongside national house builders to prepare and submit planning applications.

Nick approaches each project with an in-depth investigation of the site keeping the local context in mind allowing for creative but considered and thoughtful solutions.

    Crealy Wind Turbine

We carried out an LVIA for a single turbine at Crealy Farm in Cornwall. This included a detailed landscape character assessment of the chosen study area which uses computer modelling to create a Zone of Visual Influence (ZVI) that predicts the visual influence a particular development might have on the surrounding landscape. As part of the assessment accurate photomontages from chosen viewpoints were created, redbay uses good quality Digital SLRs to take photography and visualisation software that conforms to the best practice guidelines for such work.

    Landscape Improvements

Redbay Design was commissioned to produce a sketch design for the rear garden of a residential property in Sidmouth.

Our brief was to redesign the rear garden as an extension to the open plan kitchen dinner and to improve accessibility of the very steep garden. The design incorporated the clients love of cooking and entertaining by creating a contemporary garden room with a 'snug area' around an outdoor oven/ fire which features along the retaining wall. Water features were located to make the most of views out of the kitchen and into the garden.

The Old Coach House Roof Gardern

The brief was to create a roof garden terrace (over a new garage building) that tied back to the remodelled house. We were asked to create a contemporary formal garden with a Mediterranean feel. Central to the theme was a diagonal path that emanated from the principle area of the house and struck through the heart of the terrace.

The Italian cypress trees or pencil conifers as they are known provide striking features and Vertical relief to an otherwise flat garden where the use of large plants were restricted due to the thin soil over a concrete roof.

    Wych Elm
    Bath

Garden design project in Bath. A substantial garden in association with a new replacement dwelling. The site is perched on a high hill ridge with commanding views across the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The steep gradient of the garden with shallow soils and south facing aspect presented the designers with a set of constraints as well as opportunities. The solution was to create a series of terraces connected by a sinuous path retained using warm honey coloured bath stone boulders reclaimed from the bed rock. The planting concept centred round a mediterranean theme with low ground cover shrubs under the light dappled shade of Judus Trees punctuated with Italian cypress’s.

The project intends to convert an existing school into residential use. The intention is to achieve 40 residential units within the site, approximately 30 of which can be accommodated within the existing buildings. A further 10 units therefore would be provided through the construction of new buildings located within the site. The proposals would also include associated development to provide garden/amenity areas, car parking and internal access for cars and pedestrians.

Redbay Design in collaboration with GJR Architects, have seen the project from LVIA report through to tender production. The landscape is to design in a Georgian Style reflecting the existing buildings and is designed to a very high level of detail and quality.

    Totland Close
    Environmental Improvement Scheme

Redbay design has been involved with Totland Close since 2008, working for First Wessex Housing to transform two underused quadrant spaces within existing blocks of flats.

Through site analysis and resident surveys we have created two distinct spaces with different functions. Courtyard One has traditionally been used as a transitional space as it acts as the go between from the site entrance through to other parts of the estate including Courtyard Two and the community centre. Where as Courtyard Two had a large tarmac surface surrounded by a low wall and was used by children for informal play.

The design for Courtyard One is based around a curved promenade opening out to a central plaza that is slightly raised by subtle ground modelling and low planting that subtly dissects the site into various spaces for informal quiet seating.

The design for Courtyard Two is more a gathering area with play and ball games under a light canopy of trees which breaks up the large expanse of tarmac particularly when looking down on the space from the surrounding flats. A social garden has been created outside the community centre with decorative paving, raised borders and picnic tables which gives an additional focal point for residents to come together.

Our services included: masterplanning, detailed design and production information.

    Bovis Homes, Park Bay, Paignton

New residential community in Torbay for Bovis Homes. On the old Park Bay Garden Centre site. Our brief was to create a landscape with a sense of place that befitted the sites former use, and also reflected the essence of Torbay. Material choice uses reds and pink/grey reflecting the natural geology of the sand and limestone to be found locally. Two themes have been used with the site.

Coastal Garden - This theme will run through the main streetscene spaces throughout the site. Taking inspiration from the coastal edge with the sea, planting beds will have shingle/gravel surfaces with low hardy Mediterranean planting. This theme will form the basis for the large public open space to the south were a community garden will be created with a SUDS water feature in the form of a riverbed with stone and pebbles and timber driftwood features, seating platforms, and surrounded by waves of low vegetation.

Tropical Garden - This theme takes inspiration from the sheltered oasis’s to be found along the coast that provides an ideal micro climate for more hardy tropical exotics and architectural plants. This theme will appear in pockets through the street scene and will be the primary planting theme within the main public open space area to the south of the site, with lush green foliage and cool white and blue flowers.

    Thornhill School

Working in partnership with Thornhill Primary School, Southampton City Council and Groundwork Solent we were commissioned to develop a community Adventure Play facility that catered for all ages. The project has been extensively financed by the Lottery Fund.

The play area is fully supervised so we had an opportunity to create a facility that offers the children challenges beyond those provided by standard public play spaces.

The site itself is set within woodland which brought its own opportunities, constraints and challenges. We wanted to make full use of the setting without compromising the health of individual trees and use natural materials that complimented the site's character. The central theme was to create a high woodland climber where the children could play amongst the branches. We worked closely with The Childrens Playground Company to design equipment that achieved the design brief whilst meeting high play equipment standards.

Our services included: scheme design, coordination of specialist sub-consultant reports, planning application, production information, procurement of contractor and contract administration.
